Fireworks

As if on cue, Mother Nature provided a spectacular show of fireworks of her own last night. Kathy and I watched the sky turned to fire. And if that wasn't enough, the Swan family glided silently by in the fading last light. Wow!!! Happy 4th of July!!!

Watrerfire Safari, Providence, RI

Do you remember your Greek mythology????
Here Charon ferries a boatload of deceased mortals across the River Styx into Hades during Waterfire, Providence. Setting the camera at 0.8 sec at F/32 produced this blur. ISO 400. Tweaked a bit in Lightroom.Jan Armor

Sparks, Waterfire Safari, Providence

Here's one with an extended exposure... ISO 1000, 1 and 1/2 seconds at f/9. I like to switch from wide open to stop down using aperture preferred so I get one relatively fast shutter speed, and one slow one. The fast shutter speed shot here was a throwaway. The extended exposure rendering of the sparks make this one kind of interesting.

Noise at ISO 800

NOISE...Sometimes I hate it, sometimes I love it. I think it works pretty well here, turning the (4 seconds at f/7, hand-held) over saturated, noisy exposure into a George Seurat-like pointillistic masterpiece. Hoho... I wish.
This Waterfire safari has given me many images I never would have taken, and plenty of stuff to work on in the days to come. I've received some good suggestions from a few of you. I'll share condensed group comments on the our Waterfire Safari in another email. I think there's lots of room for improvement. BTW, I am sending selected images to Waterfire HQ very soon. Get yours posted please.Jan Armor

The Waterfire Scene

The Balloon Man is an HDR from a single image. The (slightly blurry) Gargoyle is pure Lightroom.

Here's one from last night.Lots of motion blurs. Most deleted, but a few seemed to be worth saving This one shot from the feeder boat. The fire looks almost posterized.

The tidal pool

We did the annual tidal pool trip the other day. For my son it is a must. For the grandkids it is a high point of their visit to RI. Here's Claire bear holding a Fiddler Crab, up close and personal.

Lightroom 3.0

Lighroom's new "manual" feature in the "Lens Correction" panel is similar to Photoshop's lens distortion filter, only better.
Since I do a fair amount of architectural photography using my Nikon 18-200 mm lens, with it's inherent distortion, and since I often have to tilt the camera up and down, introducing keystone distortions as well, I was always round tripping into Photshop to correct these effects. Not anymore. After enabling the appropriate profile correction for my lens (a blessing in LR 3) I switch to the "manual" setting to get rid of keystoning, and finally I "constrain the crop". Wow, everything is done right here in Lightroom. If I chose not to constrain the crop I can go into Photoshop and paint in missing edges with the clone tool. This is my old 4x5 view camera on steroids!I can also purposely introduce fisheye or stretching by going a little crazy with these sliders, as done here on my friendly swan.
This new "manual" feature is a great addition in Lightroom 3, and a real timesaver. Jan Armorjanthephotoman@gmail.com

A lazy summer evening on Indian Lake. I wondered how many times this timeless scene has repeated over the years.
