Garden predator

Garden-3250

Spiders of all shapes and sizes are everywhere in our garden, devouring mosquitos and other nuisance insects.
Here a Daddy Long Legs waits patiently on the top of an Astibe.

Floating

001_indian-lake-3104

6 AM on Indian lake in heavy fog. Total silence. As I rowed out and my dock receded into nothingness, I had the sensational of lightness, of floating weightless in some heavenly place. And how it is in our lives, this moving away from the old, letting go of the familiar and moving into the unknown with some trepidation. The only sound out here in the middle was the dipping of my oars as I sailed on. Eventually I saw shapes coming into focus, then the honking of a lonely goose. Things became more clear. I had made it to the other side.

Waterfire, Friday, June 3rd

001_waterfire-6982-4-step2-2

Waterfire
A Photo Safari
with
Jan Armor & Dan McManus

Where: Water Place Park, Providence
When: Friday, June 3rd
from 5:30 PM till whenever
Cost: $79

At Waterfire the fires burn brightly, of course, but there’s also music, mystery and romance! The torches are lighted about 8:30 and the city comes alive with an exuberant crowd of all ages, lining the river banks and watching the bonfires burn. This is a superb photo opportunity for photographers of all levels and lots of fun. Unexpected sights are everywhere. A gargoyle might wink and smile for your camera or a fairy god mother could kiss you on the forehead. Join us on this photo safari. We’ll explore the bridges and walkways of Waterplace Park with cameras in hand. Jan and Dan are experienced photography instructors who will facilitate an enjoyable group learning experience. Join like-minded people who all want to expand their photo knowledge and take some great pictures, perhaps using their cameras in new ways.

Our two part workshops provides a safe and forgiving learning environment for any level of knowledge and camera, including “Point & Shoot” photographers.
Munch your bag lunch while we present useful information about shooting this event.

Topics include techniques for shooting in low light, the art of motion blur, and capturing the architecture and cityscapes of Providence. We’ll also discuss the psychology of photographing the many and varied faces of Providence.

After our meal, we will lead an informal “Walk About” workshop at Waterplace Park, discussing the art of photographing the street culture and sights on the Riverwalk.

As night falls we shift into low light mode, shooting for interesting motion blur effects and available light street photography.

We conclude our safari at my studio in Portsmouth (formerly Armor Photography Studio) on the following Wednesday evening for an optional two hours of image projection and discussion. Sharing your favorite images and seeing other photographers’ work is an excellent way to extend your learning.

Our philosophy is “small group” (limited to 12 people) so we are able to give you individual advice and attention when you need it.

Check out selected student work from last year’s safaris.

Center City Reunion

Philadelphia-2277

Happy chatter and nostalgia filled the banquet hall at the Crown Plaza as we celebrated our 50 Year Upper Darby High School Reunion last weekend. My how the city center has changed, but we all really hadn't, just hair gone gray and extra pounds, as well as a few extra laugh lines. It was a good time, and Kathy and I were so glad we made the trip for this milestone event!

First light, Long Beach Island

001_ship-bottom-2492

24th Street was just like I remembered and as I looked out to the horizon the childhood memories flooded in, all mixed up and out of order, wave after wave of happy times long gone.

Cormorant, another view

001_cormorant-1982

I love the large file size of my 7D. It allows me to crop out a very small section from the file and still hold up.

Cormorant,

The Cormorant, a beautiful bird in flight, not so graceful on take off.
