I rowed down to the bottom of the cove in a light fog this AM and found Mama Swan with only three cygnets, constantly calling out for her others. Once there were five, now only three, and one chick was clearly sick or injured. This little guy couldn't keep up, and needed frequent rest stops along the morning breakfast swim up the cove. So sad to witness, but finally Mom swam off with the two remaining healthy babies into the center of the lake, apparently abandoning the sickly bird that was lagging behind. I watched this tiny single swim slowly toward the nest, then back towards his mother, confused and alone, and very vulnerable.
A few minutes later Mama did a fly by around the lake, still looking for her other two chicks. Sure enough, about twenty minutes later these two little rebels came swimming merrily up the lake, looking for Mom. Let's hope they find her before dark...Jan Armor
