The headline read "SWAMPED"

And we were. RI is really wet. The lake is almost up to our pier and the backyard is perfect for mud wrestling. Here is the water coming out of our basement! Only kidding.

faded photographs

Rain, rain, rain... so much of a good thing. Almost up to the pier. I'm worried that it may float away...
Anyway, confined here to the computer, and surfing through my collections as I sometimes do, I came across a faded shot, purposely out of focus shot done at the beach. This image led to thoughts of the the beaches on Long Beach Island, so long ago. That led to thoughts of Victoria Wright, my Scottich aunt who frequently took me under her wing, and kept me on the straight and narrow. We're celebrating her 95th birthday in May. What could be better on this rainy day then posting some pictures that remind me of my dear Aunt Vic from times long long ago.

A little masterpiece

The sign says, "A beacon of light," and it is for anyone interested in New England architecture. It is simply called "South Ferry Church. " Recognized as an architectural masterpiece on the National Historic Register, it sits out in the middle of nowhere, high on a hill overlooking Narragansett Bay. At first glance it is easy to drive on by, but please stop and look! Here is a house of worship build with love. It is an example of inspired design and immaculate workmanship. There is exquisite detailing everywhere, from steeple to shingles. The windows flood the interior with the sunrise and the shutters are an unexpected touch, green punctuation marks across the sides that repeat the design of the door. Understated use of quiet stained glass on a few panes is the final touch. Go see, and bring your camera.

Sunday Going To Meeting

I was out at first light, first shooting the wall, and then some more of my favorite little New England church, South Ferry Congregational, in Bonnet Shores. Another gorgeous day!

Abstractions

More from the Sea Wall series. Thinking I was done, I started to cut across the parking lot to my car and found these. I posted the whole series, the concrete "holes from poles" and the sand series. The first one is a layered combination, To see them all on Flickr. Go here:

Swan Lake

I almost could hear Camille Saint Sans beautiful melody playing as this lonely swan glided by in the fog. Just too perfect...

rain, mud, gloom on the lake

The back yard is a swamp. We have our own wetland right out our window. However, the daffs, tulips, and skunk cabbage are lving it!

Waiting for the dawn

I woke very early to this erie glow over the lake, lights from Warwick and Wakefield, glowing off the heavy overcast. Totally still here at 5:30 on a Monday morning. No wind, only Time rushing by, pulling me along, faster and faster.

Along The Seawall

So much happening in Narragansett, so bright, so young.. Met a guy who was sitting on the wall, singing his heart out. Pretty good, too. I stood and listened for a bit then asked, "Mind if I take your picture?" He said, "Go ahead, man."

A lady came by struggling with two Pugs, click click.

Later, the shiny steel railing pointing skyward turned me on, shot a whole series.

And of course the foam, never can resist the ever changing wash of the waves onto the beach.

So I've begun a little series called "Along The Sea Wall," part of a new collection of Washington County photographs.

PS: Unfortunately my Google blog posts don't show the whole composition. You need to click on image to see the whole enchilada.

Gifts from Canada

The geese HAVE arrived. Soon the battle will be engaged to keep these beautiful winged birds, affectionally referred to as "Flying Feces," off our back lawn. Per this photo, they grow bolder, having already taken up residence on my rock.

Ruffled feathers

A flock of gulls that live here on the lake have been basking on the public pier, smoothing ruffled feathers. Wish I knew how to do that.

A Place For...

I cannot resist the triangles of the Narragansett Seawall. I've taken this picture many times. This is a quiet landscape with a horizon that extends forever. It just draws me in. It makes me feel small. It is never the same, changing with the weather and the light. It is a place to watch the clouds go by. A place to run or to walk. A place for reflection.

Lady in waiting

Here's Veronica, at around 6 months. She and her husband are quite a story. They immigrated from Brazil in the early nineties, coming here separately with nothing but the shirts on their backs, and speaking no English to boot. V lived alone, worked at MacDonalds, and learned some rudimentary English by watching TV. Eventually got a position in a kitchen counter store, which is where we met her, and instantly loved her. Hard working gal, now has a good man, a house and a car, and both have good jobs. It an old American tale, still an inspiration. Although I rarely do this type of photography any longer, they were both so excited about the coming little girl, I just could not say no to her request.

It's easy to forget we fighting a war, even while we shop. People are dying. Our people. For a real live look at Afghanistan go here. Amazing images all. Texture overlays

I just downloaded some new textures from a new Internet acquaintance who subscribed to my Posterous blog:

Thanks Nick for these new overlays. Here are a few doodles this AM using them:

Xray hand over impressionistic figurative painting of a woman, in Musee d'Orsay, Paris
Flags from a wall in Portland Maine
Crucifix from gravestone in Ireland

Same overlay yet again over ann old image of St. Mark's Basilica, Venice
